Introduction
Life in a motorhome didn’t begin as a coincidence – it began as a calling.
A calling for freedom, calm, new perspectives, and letting go of the old.
This travel story is a small diary from our big life change.
Here are the little moments that mattered: the safety valve we forgot, the stress of roundabouts, the stomach turning on Norröna, and all the emotions in between.
The goal isn’t to show a perfect life on wheels – far from it.
The goal is to share the journey as it truly was: fun, stressful, and incredibly full of learning.
This is our travel story – one chapter at a time.
Welcome aboard.
The First Steps Into the Unknown
Wow – and wow again!
That was probably the phrase of the day during those first weeks. Everything was new, everything was exciting, and we were determined to dive into this journey with open minds.
Akranes → Eskifjörður – Getting to Know the Camper

We left Akranes on October 11th, 2023, and drove all the way east to Eskifjörður between two storms.
Over 700 km on the first day – not bad at all.
It was our first real trip in our new home on wheels, and we felt like the coolest people on the road.
We hadn’t quite figured out the safety valve in the water system, so the tank emptied itself on day one. Thankfully Iceland is the land of endless fresh water – and nothing has beaten Icelandic water.
The first nights were spent fiddling endlessly with the Truma settings. I’m pretty sure we tested every single option possible and even some impossible ones..
On the Way to Seyðisfjörður – Heart in Our Throats
On October 18th, we headed toward Seyðisfjörður.
Driving over Fjarðarheiði in winter in a motorhome we barely knew… well, “a bit stressful” might be an understatement.
But up we went, and over we got. Thank all the good spirits that the brakes worked that day.
Next mission: boarding Norröna.

The Waiting Line – Irrational Fear of Authorities
For some inexplicable reason, I’ve always been nervous around police and customs officers.
Waiting in line was therefore far from relaxing. I stood there with a knot in my stomach, half-expecting them to find something wrong. But I got away with it this time.
Despite shaky hands, we managed to drive onto the ferry, park the camper and make it all the way up to our cabin.
You can book a trip with Norræna on the Smyril Line website.
Farewell – Leaving Iceland Behind
Sailing out of Seyðisfjörður and watching the land slowly disappear was powerful.
The emotions were a mixture of excitement, longing, anxiety, and doubts about whether this was the right decision.
The plan was to live in the motorhome indefinitely. Maybe not come back.
That’s no small step to take.

Heading to Denmark – Seasickness Pills
The crossing to the Faroe Islands went fairly well, although our stomachs had other opinions. The seasickness pills did their job and saved the day.
Due to weather, the stop in Tórshavn was longer than usual, and we took the chance to enjoy a slow walk through the town – beautiful centre, lovely old neighbourhoods.
Then the journey continued, down along the eastern coast of Norway to avoid storms, and finally ashore in Hirtshals, Denmark.
We had officially arrived abroad in our motorhome!
Driving in Europe
We were nearly beginners when it came to driving abroad but quickly discovered it was no harder than driving in Reykjavík.
Clear signs, good flow – but the roundabouts?
Yes, they can confuse anyone. Rules differ from country to country.
We then drove straight down to Aalborg to spend the first nights with friends.
To Be Continued…
The journey had only just begun – and this was only the first step.
